Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP)

Administration Office: Room F58, 1st Floor, Nye Bevan House, Maclure Rd, Rochdale, OL11 1DN
Tel: 01706 261916

The Newborn Hearing Screening Programme is currently being provided for the Rochdale, Bury, Heywood, Middleton and Oldham population. The Hearing Screeners are based on the Maternity units at Rochdale, Bury and Oldham Hospitals, to enable the screening to be completed before the baby is discharged home. The Hearing Screening teams also screen babies in the community utilising local Health Centres, to ensure all babies have easy access to the Hearing Screening Programme.

The Newborn Hearing Screening Teams ensure all parents who are offered the hearing screen, are given all the relevant information, which enables them to make an informed choice regarding the hearing screening process.

What is Newborn Hearing Screen and where and how is it done?

There are 2 types of screen used by the hearing screening teams. The most common screen is the Otoacoustic Emission (OAE). This involves placing a soft tipped earpiece into the outer part of the baby’s ear, and a soft clicking sound is played. In a hearing ear, the organ of hearing (cochlea) should produce sounds in response to these clicks, which can be recorded and analysed by the computerised screening system. It only takes a few minutes and can be completed at the bedside.

The Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) is completed when clear responses are not obtained from the OAE. This screen involves placing small sensors on the baby’s head, neck and shoulder and then a quiet clicking sound is presented through soft headphones, called muffins. For this screen the computer analyses the response to sounds beyond the cochlea.

The OAE and AABR screening methods are very safe and effective methods to check for signs of possible hearing impairment in babies.
